Pin Up
Our latest release includes major improvements to the capabilities of pins, including the ability to change sizes, change marker tokens and attach multiple encounters, book references or maps to a single pin.
Art and Tokens
This week’s release includes a variety of new options for adding art to your creations. While the player experience may not be visibly very different, in the coming weeks, players should expect to see differences as creators, including us, adopt these new abilities.
Variant Classes and Spell Points
We have received many requests for instructions on how to modify existing classes to change some aspect of an existing class, especially around published variants of classes like the revised Ranger. While it is possible to change an existing class that can quickly get confusing since you likely don’t want to use just the modified class. Creating a copy of an existing class mostly works, but doesn’t copy the subclasses or support new subclasses without lots of manual copying. To support this scenario, we introduced variant classes in this week’s update.
Stacking the Cards
With the increasing number of character options available on Shard, we have found that it has become harder to find and make selections, and as we ready new settings this will only become more challenging. To improve the selection process, today’s release introduces a new card-based selection model for races, classes, backgrounds and feats along with extension enhancements to prioritize options.
Alternate Map Images
Shard now supports having multiple images for a single map and easily switching between them while maintaining fog state, map position and all tokens.
While working with map makers and other content creators, we discovered that it is fairly common to have multiple versions of the same map.
Extending 5E
Part of the appeal of 5E is the large variety of settings and game styles available. While they all build on top of the core 5E game mechanics, these settings and styles also frequently bring their own twists as well. Many of these we have been able to support just by allowing the creation of everything from custom races and classes to items and custom types. Working with content providers, we have also discovered the need for more basic changes to the character sheet. Our new support for extensions addresses this need.
More and Less Sharing
Today’s release makes it easier for players to use all of the character options (classes, races, backgrounds, …) they own or create when playing in any campaign and easier for gamemasters to keep their unique monsters and magic items a secret.
More magic…
Spells are a huge part of playing the game. Game Masters have had the ability to add tokens to the map representing spell areas of effect almost from the beginning of Shard and now players can too.
As part of this change, we created a token type called Spell Token. Spell Tokens come in all the standard shapes (cone, cube, cylinder, line, rectangle, and sphere). They can be created on the fly by selecting a shape, size, and color or by uploading an image and sizing it. You can give your token a name that will be remembered and associated with your character. Once it’s on the map, you can move it or rotate it to represent the area of effect of your spell.
DM Quick Start
A short post to explain getting started quickly with running an adventure in Shard.
Better with Links
Having digital tools makes it easy to navigate and connect content, making it possible to have information available where and when you need it. We may take this for granted when using professionally authored web sites or applications, but it can be a bit daunting to create these connections when producing your own content. To make this easier in Shard Tabletop we have introduced a feature to not only allow you to make these links but to highlight potential links in your text.
