TIP: Encounter Difficulty

When planning an encounter it can be tricky to figure out how to make the encounter the correct difficulty. There are standard approaches to using the challenge rating of monsters combined with the number of characters and their level to approximate the difficulty of an encounter.
The planned encounter dialog provides tools to help you to get the correct level when building an encounter.

  1. Set the target character count and character level for the encounter.

  2. Next to the settings the target adjusted experience point targets are displayed.

  3. As you add monsters the adjusted experience points for the encounter are displayed at the bottom of the tracker list.

Note: adjusted XP adjusts the difficulty based on the number of monsters. Lots of monsters raise the adjusted XP since they will get lots of attacks.
